Project Description
SemSync is a project for synchronizing entities (currently contacts) between different object stores. It contains connectors to Microsoft Outlook, MS Exchange, XML, vCard, CSV, Google Contacts, Microsoft Access, Wer-Kennt-Wen, StayFriends, StudiVZ, Xing and other social networks.

How I do work with it

Please contact me in case of problems - mostly I can solve issues in 1-2 days, if I get the information what did fail in detail

Oracle CRM on Demand - this connector has been developed by SDX AG (the company I work for), so it's NOT licensed under LGPL, but I have the permission to publish the source code and grant you the right for using it.

When downloading the complete source code (you can download the latest version from the "Source Code" tab on the right side of the page), you might get some "Project type not supported" messages from Visual Studio. This is because I’ve added WiX-, DocProject-, Silverlight-, WCF- and Azure projects to the solution. You can simply exclude the projects not supported by your development environment or download the SDKs to support these project types (they are all available for free).

Address Synchronization

I’m synchronizing contacts from the various networks to my Outlook and the corporate Exchange server by first exporting them into the file system using the connector “StdContact Filesystem one Xml per contact” with the template “Template Syncronize”. While this export I’m matching the contacts to the already exported data, so that I will have no duplicates. Then I’m importing from this file system connector to “StdContact Microsoft Outlook 2010” and “StdContact Microsoft Exchange Web Services via Managed API” to update my address books.

Address normalization

By exporting the contacts into the target “StdContact Microsoft Excel OpenXml” I have a very handy tool to process a list of addresses (sorting, copying and correcting data). Then I’m simply syncing back the data into Outlook and Exchange as described in “Address Synchronization“.

Reading connections between contacts

The template “Template Get Contact Relations” uses a connector interface to read some more information about the contacts “friends”. The implementations of my connectors do only read the IDs of the “friends” and perform a lookup in the already existing contacts for matching entries – so you will not get all “friends”, but only those you are connected to, too (otherwise we would blow up the contact information with each additional run and end up exporting really all data from the sources).

Analyzing the data

The connector “StdContact DGML Graph” allows having a look for the connection between the contacts (after getting the connection by using the template “Template Get Contact Relations”). By copying data to this connector you will create a dgml-file that can directly opened in Visual Studio 2010 (“Professional” and better).

If you trust in my capabilities to write nice programs and want to try synchronizing without installing Visual Studio, then download the file “Sync Outlook with Xing” – this is a compiled version with a very simple user interface and only supports synchronizing from Xing to Outlook. You also might give “Synchronization Manager” a try, which is a little bit more complex, but allows you to use any of the connectors below and saves the "log on" credentials in a save way.

Arure is an cloud implementation inside the Microsoft data centers. This project uses the Azure SDK to locally host a process that is able to be deployed into the Microsoft Cloud (Azure). This way you can see how little is needed to implement a cloud service (this one is a WCF service with a connection to the Azure Blob Storage) and communicate with it from a client (implemented as a SemSync-connector project).
If you don't plan to use the cloud project, you can simple exclude the project from the solution.

WCF - Windows Communication Foundation
This solution includes a Silverlight client and a WCF service hosted in a web project. If you don't plan to use the Silverlight client and you don't want to investigate the WCF implementation, you can exclude these projects from the solution to speed up compiling.

The Windows Installer XML (WiX) is a toolset that builds Windows installation packages from XML source code.
This project does use the version 3.5 which you can download from http://wix.sourceforge.net/releases/ to integrate setup generation as a build project into the solution. You might skip installing this if you don't want to build setup (msi) files.
